BAGER HURT AS PANTHERS CRASH

Peterborough Panthers 34 Wolverhampton Wolves 38
Thursday 8th October – Midland League

Peterborough’s home programme for 2009 was brought to a disappointing end with a defeat by Wolverhampton and a heat 12 crash which saw Panthers star Henning Bager taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

With the paramedic having to go to hospital with Bager it left the meeting with no medical cover and with little chance of him returning before the curfew a decision was made to award heat 12 and the meeting was then abandoned with the result standing.

In what was the last heat run at the Showground this year Korneliussen was leading Skornicki at the start of the second lap, when Kerr on the outside lost it going into the first bend and went down directly in front of the pursuing Bager who was left with absolutely nowhere to go.

Kerr was fairly quickly up but it was clear early on that Bager was seriously hurt and he was taken off in an ambulance after extensive treatment on track.

It effectively dampened what up till that point was starting to look like a Panthers fight back after the Wolves had taken control with two mid match 5-1’s.

Peterborough had started the brighter and provided all the first four heat winners to establish a 6 point lead after heat 4 but the Wolves pairing of Lindgren and Klindt shot away to lead the 5th with Bjerre managing to limit the damage by passing Klindt as they came out of the second bend.

Iversen and Dryml both made excellent starts to lead the 6th with Karlsson seemingly out of it, but Kerr slid off on the last bend of the opening lap and was unable to extricate his machine from the air fence which caused the race to be stopped.

In the rerun the Panthers again made the start but Karlsson slipped by Dryml on the outside of lap one and then took Iversen on the inside going into lap 2 and never really looked like losing it after that.

Wolves comeback was then complete with an easy maximum in the 7th through Woffinden and Skornicki with all the early chase being done by Jesper Kristiansen, it didn't get any better in heat 8 as the Wolves repeated their heat 7 score with another 5-1 this time through the fast starting Klindt and Proctor to establish a 4 point lead.

That lead was quickly extended to 6 in heat 9 with Karlsson, hunting down and passing Bjerre, whilst Kerr took the all important third place.

Panthers hit back with the best race of the night in heat 10 as despite Woffinden and Skornicki making the better starts the Panthers went either side of them down the back straight to take the lead, Woffinden pressurised Dryml for the entire four laps but was unable to get back on terms although not for want of trying.

Lindgren and Klindt immediately re instead the Wolves lead with a maximum of their own in 11 with Klindt catching and passing Korneliussen towards the end of lap 3.

But with the match warming up nicely a nasty looking spill ended it and left a real dampener on the whole evening.
