PANTHERS DECK THE ACES

Thursday August 13, 2009
Peterborough 58 Belle Vue 38 - Elite League B

Kings Lynn’s teenage star Darcy Ward showed off his immense talent with a quite magnificent paid 16 haul as the Panthers saw off the challenge of the Belle Vue Aces.

Not content with top scoring the youngster broke Hans Andersen’s track record which had stood since April 2007 by notching 59.0 seconds precisely when powering away to win heat 1, with Panthers captain Niels Kristian Iversen following him home for a perfect Panthers start.

Dryml stormed away to win the second with Bager just losing out to Ostergaard having passed Wright at the end of the first lap.

The next two heats were shared with Bjerre slipping by Hougaard to take the third whilst Wright made up for a pointless first race by storming away to win heat 4.

Bjerre trapped well and was gone in the 5th with Hansen having to work hard in the first two laps to get the better of Kaspzrak and Wright. Panthers then stretched their lead to 14 points with another maximum in heat 6 with Ward joining Iversen up front after a thrilling duel with Ostergaard which saw Darcy on top despite a shove from Ostergaard whilst on lap 3.

Chris Morten played his first tactical in heat 7 and timed it very well with Hougaard taking the lead down the back straight, Bjerre was pressuring him but his bike gave up the ghost whilst he was second and the Aces took full advantage to register a 7-2.

Heat 8 was all Panthers with Ward and Bager leaving their opponents for dead from the start and they extended their lead with another 5-1 in the 9th, with Bjerre and then Hansen passing the early race leader Ostergaard.

A third consecutive maximum from the electric starting Iversen and Ward in heat 10 took the Panthers into a 21 points lead at the interval.

Whatever was in the coffee or whatever Chris Morton told his riders certainly worked as the Aces came out fighting after the interval and immediately made serious inroads into Panthers lead, Kasprzak who up to that point hadn’t scored a point came out as a tactical and made easily his best start of the night to lead with Wright getting the better of a race with Hansen for second place to earn the Aces 8 points, Belle Vue were at it again in heat 12 as the Aces pair led from the gate with Bager and Hansen getting in each others way.

Iversen stopped the Aces charge with a well timed win in the 13th but Wards maximum was ruined by the fast starting Kasprzak although their wasn’t much in it at the finish.

Panthers sealed the match points with their 7th 5-1 in the penultimate heat 14 and then finished off the match in style with another 5-1 in the nominated race with Ward bringing the house down after getting the better of Kasprzak and then Hougaard to join race leader Iversen on the third lap.

The track clearly suited the Panthers and the first 6 race times were all under 60 seconds, but this was still a good team performance with everyone amongst the points.

Ward not surprisingly got the man of the match award but Iverson’s first maximum didn’t go unnoticed and Bjerre might have joined him had he not broken down in heat 7.

Panthers needed a good performance and no doubt will draw confidence from the result but no one is under any illusions that Mondays match with league leaders Swindon could be a whole different ball game.
