ABD: WOLVES 7 PANTHERS 5

Sunday October 20, 2019
PETERBOROUGH’S season came to a soggy end when their Premiership Supporters’ Cup match at Wolverhampton on Sunday was abandoned after two completed races.

The fixture went exactly the same way as the original attempt to run it back in early April, with deteriorating conditions making the decision inevitable.

Wolves led 7-5 at the time a halt was called, although a series of home riders had hit trouble in the greasy conditions.

Luke Becker crashed out of Heat 2 when holding a 5-1 position, and Jacob Thorssell came to grief in the same spot in the first attempt to run Heat 3.

There was a delay in the hope that persistent heavy drizzle would clear, but the entry to turn one was causing particular problems and the re-run saw Nick Morris lock up completely, forcing Scott Nicholls to smartly put his machine down.

The Crendon Panthers would surely have recorded a 5-0 had the race been started again, but that proved to be the end of the action after further discussions between managers, captains and the referee.

The meeting is not expected to be re-staged.

Panthers boss Carl Johnson said: “It’s disappointing and after what I’ve had to do over the last couple of days to put a team together, it’s frustrating.

“I think the team we had out tonight could probably have caused a little bit of an upset, and we could have gone home with a win, but it wasn’t to be and we can’t affect what happens with the weather.

“We tried, we were prepared to go out there but the Wolves boys weren’t so keen and three of them had an off, and we didn’t want to see anyone come away with an injury.

“It was a common sense decision to call the meeting off. We can’t predict what the weather’s going to do, and hopefully Wolves don’t get a fine for not fulfilling the fixture.”
