PETERBOROUGH go in search of their first silverware of the season when they defend the Championship Fours at Redcar on Sunday (2pm).

The T.Balfe Construction Panthers won the event on a memorable afternoon at the East of England Arena last August, and although they are not the hosts on this occasion, the Media Prima Arena could hardly be a better venue for them based on their league record there in recent years.

It’s nearly a decade since the Fours was successfully retained, after Workington collected back-to-back victories in 2008 and 2009.

Panthers take a strong quartet to Teesside made up of Scott Nicholls, Ulrich Ostergaard, Michael Palm Toft and Bradley Wilson-Dean, with Ellis Perks named as reserve.

All eleven Championship clubs race in the same qualifying group, and they have eight races apiece to score enough points to move into the Final, which is contested over 12 heats by the top four teams.

Palm Toft will be the first Panthers rider on track when he appears in a strong Heat 3 up against Dan Bewley, Chris Harris and Richard Lawson.

Ostergaard is the sole survivor from last year’s victorious line-up, although Wilson-Dean was also part of the club’s overall line-up in 2017, and the Dane is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

Ostergaard said: “It’s the top four from every team so it’s a hard meeting, and you need some luck on the day.

“Everyone needs to score points, and we were really good last year around Peterborough for some reason after we’d done poorly in the years before.

“To win it at Peterborough in front of our home crowd was a big achievement, and something I’m really proud of.

“It would be nice to go there on Sunday and try to do the same, and hopefully get a bit of silverware for the club!”
