PETERBOROUGH are all set to stage the Championship’s match of the season so far on Friday.

The table-topping T.Balfe Construction Panthers will host second-placed Lakeside with both teams looking to pull further clear of the chasing pack.

Panthers reached the halfway stage in their schedule with 23 points, having added seven to their total thanks to successive wins at Scunthorpe and Redcar in their last two league matches.

The Hammers are hot on their heels with 22 points from eight matches, having completed a weekend double over Scunthorpe, starting with a dramatic one-point win at the Eddie Wright Raceway and then a demolition job on the Scorpions at home.

Both teams have a healthy advantage over nearest challengers Glasgow and Berwick, and victory on Friday would be another significant step towards a play-off place.

And with Panthers having enjoyed a tremendous run of five wins in six in all competitions, promoter Ged Rathbone is anticipating a big-night atmosphere both on and off the track.

He said: “We’re all really looking forward to Friday. Matches at this stage of the season really don’t get any bigger than this one.

“We’re the two most in-form sides in the league, we’ve both had some great results over the last few weeks and really everything is set for a classic encounter.

“Lakeside are a very strong team themselves, they proved it over the weekend against Scunthorpe, and we want to test ourselves against them and hopefully beat them.

“It’s Friday night racing and I’m really hoping the fans turn out in force for this one. It’s a huge meeting and the boys deserve a lot of support for the effort they’re putting in for us.”
