PETERBOROUGH are building up to a big weekend double at the East of England Arena – with the chance to go clear in the Championship table.

The T.Balfe Construction Panthers sit top of the early standings after beating Redcar at home and then collecting three useful points from away trips to Sheffield and Edinburgh last week.

With no more away matches until early June, they return to their own circuit for the visits of Workington (Friday, 7.30pm) and Edinburgh (Sunday, 5pm) and can double their current six-point total with two wins.

The first test is the Comets, who boast a solid side led by the in-form Ty Proctor, with British wonderkid Dan Bewley and ex-Panther Bradley Wilson-Dean also in their ranks.

And co-promoter Ged Rathbone says it’s vital that his side don’t let their positive results on the road go to waste, and that they build on their strong start to the league competition.

He said: “We take absolutely nothing for granted with any of these teams when they come to our circuit.

“It’s no good doing what we’re doing away from home if we drop points at the East of England Arena, so we have to make sure that this year we try to make it into a fortress.

“We know they are almost always going to be close meetings there, it’s a track that everyone enjoys racing on, but if we can win by a seven-point margin then I’d take that every time!

“I’ve got to say once again that the team spirit within the boys this year is terrific, and that was shown up in the away matches.

“You wouldn’t believe that Nike Lunna for example really dislikes the Edinburgh circuit, but we had a chat before the meeting, we said it would be different with us and we gave him some confidence.

“He went into the meeting with a clear head, he was visualising making gates and good first corners, and he was fine and scored double figures which was fantastic.

“Last week’s results were positive, but once again we quickly move on, and we concentrate fully on Workington and then Edinburgh this weekend.”

Panthers are set to be at full strength for both meetings – full line-ups for the Comets clash to follow on Thursday.
